Freediving

 

Freediving or breath-hold diving is a type of advanced snorkelling and in-water adventure that allows enthusiastic people to experience the sights, sounds and challenges of the most natural of underwater experiences. Freediving allows you to peacefully interact with the aquatic environment.
The purpose of Freediving is to be able to enjoy diving whilst remaining unhampered by breathing apparatus such as scuba equipment. Freedivers can, on a single breath of air, explore the underwater realm for minutes at a time in comfort. Human evolution and development has ingrained us with an underwater potential the same as our marine cousins, whales, seals and dolphins. Research shows that we were once aquatic animals, which lived and breathed in the sea. The memory of that former self still resides deep within us and it has even been studied and named - the mammalian diving reflex. This term describes the physiological changes that occur when mammals (whether whales, dolphins or potentially us) hold their breath and dive beneath the sea for extended periods of time. The nature of Freediving allows you to slip without falling into the depths of the blue in a state of euphoria and relaxation. Freediving is about the comfort and exploration of the ocean realm for recreation, competition or personal discovery.

The largest organisation for freedive education is AIDA, International Association for the Development of Apnea. AIDA is recognised worldwide and is your gateway to ensure quality freediving wherever you are for fun dives, training, competitions and world record recognition.

At the heart of AIDA courses lies the need to ensure your safety and that of others diving with you, protection of the environment and a fun and enjoyable teaching atmosphere. Courses are well balanced between the academics, equipment usage, pool skills and open water experiences.

Freedive Egypt is the only place you can learn to freedive in Hurghada with a qualified AIDA freediving instructor. As well as being an AIDA freediving instructor Suzanne is also a PADI SCUBA Diving instructor and can therefore not only teach you to freedive she can also help you to reduce your air consumption while SCUBA diving and teach you how to relax in the water whatever activity you are undertaking.

Suzanne has been on the UK Freediving Team since 2002 for World Championships that have taken place in Hawaii, Vancouver and Egypt! While in Vancouver she also qualified as an AIDA Judge and has had the pleasure of judging a number of World and National Records for competitors from around the world. Suzanne has also competed in regional competitions in the UK, Dahab, Greece and Cyprus.

All prices below are from our Hurghada Centre but other locations are available on request. Course prices are exclusive of AIDA * certification fee of €10 per course.

 

 


AIDA** Freediver

The AIDA** Freediver Course is for people with experience of snorkelling and who feel comfortable in the water both on the surface and under the water. Throughout this course you will learn safety procedures and techniques to enjoy breath-hold diving. You will learn the basics in Static Apnea, Dynamic Apnea and Constant Weight Freediving. You earn this certification by completing 2 theory sessions, 2 confined water sessions and 3 open water sessions from the shore and from one of our boats on the beautiful Red Sea. After completion you will be able to dive safely with a buddy of the same level anywhere in the world!

 
Certification AIDA** Freediver allows you to dive to a maximum depth of 20m with an independent buddy or professional guide.
Duration 3 days
Requirements Be 18 years of age or older (16 years with parent or guardian consent), hold a valid medical statement and be able to swim at least 200 metres non-stop and 300 metres with mask, snorkel and fins.
Schedule

Day 1:    Knowledge development, Static Apnea and Dynamic Apnea.

Day 2:    Knowledge Development, Open Water Sessions and ** Exam

Day 3:    Open water sessions
